So you want to be a Real Estate Agent?
It’s typical for people to assume that once they have their Real Estate License they will automatically be making boat loads of cash, driving fancy cars, and living in a mansion. The reality is MOST Realtors fail to make it more than 5 years in the industry.
If you’re a new Real Estate Agent, just starting out can be extremely difficult. You’re probably a bit overwhelmed with all of the lead generation strategies Realtors use. The first thing you need to understand is that there are many different strategies Realtors use to generate leads, and there are multi-million dollar producers using different ones. Whether it’s social media, cold-calling, online content marketing there is a number of ways to have success in Real Estate. Find something you enjoy doing, be the best at it, and use real estate mentoring to surround yourself with other successful Realtors using that same method.
FIND A MENTOR!
Someone who is already having multi-million dollar success with the one or two lead generation strategies you enjoy has proven the model! You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Use real estate mentoring to turn your idea into a reality.

For instance, I knew I wanted to have the BEST Raleigh Real Estate Website. When someone searched online for homes for sale in Raleigh, NC, or for information on how to sell their home they would find my website. At this point I wanted my visitors to fall in love with the user experience and local information available to keep them coming back!
Right now, when people search for something broad like Raleigh Realtor or something specific like Holly Springs Luxury Homes for Sale my website comes up.

One of the first things I did when I was starting out as a new Realtor was connect with a Colorado Springs Real Estate Agent, Andrew Fortune, who was already proving the model I wanted to follow.
This relationship proved to be one of, if not, the most important breakthrough I had. I started giving back to help Andrew grow his business and in return he helped me grow mine.
Being a great mentor, Andrew introduced me to other like-minded individuals who were also using the same model. I went from having one awesome mentor, to an incredible group of mentors from all over the world! Now we are all helping one another grow each other’s business through blogging and social media. You can, and should, connect with a number of the top real estate industry professionals on social media here.
If you’re anything like me patience is hard to have, especially when you’ve invested so much time, effort, and money into your business and your savings account is dwindling. I had a team of people helping me from all over the world, who had proven the model and were having success. It is with their success and help that I was able to stay confident in my decision to focus on technology and online marketing.
The thing is most real estate mentoring programs are tied to a specific lead generation method. I found an active agent who was successful outside of those programs that didn’t fit how I wanted to run my business.
Don’t be shy. Be professional, polite, and kind. These people were in your shoes once upon a time.
My suggestion is to start by giving back – ask them “how can I help you grow your business?” Once you start helping them, they are going to be much more open to taking the time out of their day to help you.
Mimic the moves they make with great detail. If your mentor is using a lead generation strategy that you enjoy, and it’s working, try to replicate it as best you can. Don’t be afraid to ask questions along the way, most people are open to helping.
A great way to give back is through social media and helping promote the content of others.
Something someone once said to me is, “if there is a person in the room telling you there is only one way to do things they’re 1. Wrong or 2. Trying to sell you something.”
When I first started out I was told I needed to cold call, cold call, cold call, and it was something I hated. I did it though because my motivation was carrying me and it did work. My conversion percentage on phone calls was around .03% and it was not a business model I could sustain.
Other agents would tell me that my online content marketing strategy was wrong, and these were savvy veterans. For awhile I had people expressing their opinion of what I was trying to accomplish and how I needed to listen to the lead gen strategies my brokerage was teaching me.
Had it not been for my mentors, I 100% would have assumed these other real estate agents were right. Especially because of the time and effort I had already invested without much to show for it. What carried me through the ‘noise’ was the fact it had already been proven! These veteran Realtors were scared of what they didn’t know, and that was the power of the internet, technology, and social media.
My first six months were the hardest, and it wasn’t until I was 180 days into my Real Estate Career that I closed my first deal/s (represented both sides as a dual agent). Closing the first deal was huge as it gave me breathing room to focus on my goal of creating the best real estate website in Raleigh, NC.
To this day if you google things like Raleigh Realtor, or Raleigh Realty my website is on the first page and it ultimately sends me 10-15 leads per week sometimes 3 or 4 a day. When people go to google and type in homes for sale in Raleigh NC or Cary homes for sale my website comes up. They fall in love with the high quality content on the site and ultimately want to work with me!
The moral of the story here is Find a Real Estate Agent Mentor when you start out in real estate. Someone who has already proven a model that you will enjoy replicating – not one that you wake up every day feeling bad about.
Why am I a Real Estate Agent? Because I believe the best way for people to become financially free is through the buying, selling, and investing of real estate. I’m in this business to help people build an incredible financial future, I’m not in this business to make hundreds of cold calls every day to people who have already had 40 other agents call them. If your real estate coaching mentoring is leading you down a path you can’t see yourself being happy with, don’t do it!
If you’re going to become a Real Estate Agent, start by finding a mentor, and when you find one who has proven the model and is genuinely helpful…Don’t look back!
